Differences in Mother¡¯s Parenting Attitudes by the Cluster of Child Client¡¯s Temperament and Character in Play Therapy

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to identify child client¡¯s temperament and character clusters, and to test the differences of mother¡¯s parenting attitudes in these clusters. For this purpose, a total of 338 mothers were measured in terms of the child client¡¯s temperament, character and their parenting attitudes. Descriptive, correlation analysis and 2 step cluster analysis was conducted for this study. The results were as follow. First, four clusters by child client¡¯s temperament were identified: ¡°impulsive risk-seeking type¡±, ¡°timid avoidance type¡±, ¡°stable adaptation type¡±, and ¡°resourceless helplessness type¡±. Second, four clusters by child client¡¯s character were identified: ¡°adaptive type¡±, ¡°daydreaming type¡±, ¡°demoralizing type¡±, and ¡°individualistic type¡±. Third, there were significant differences observed in parenting attitude by each clusters. This study is both interesting and significant in that it provides useful information for the most appropriate forms of intervention during play therapy and parent counseling.
